What You Would've Been

"Come with me now
So that I can show you how
These airplanes work from top
To bottom, from go to stop."

You wanted so badly to teach
Me everything, to help me reach
An understanding of what you knew,
A connection between me and you.

The war had taught you so much,
But the one thing that you must
Have forgotten was how to stand
Up for yourself, how to be the man.

The love in your eyes was unquestionable
But you just couldn't tell her
That you loved us too,
That we were part of you.

So you let her rule
What else could you do
But watch us from afar
And long to be a part.

I wonder how it would have been
All the time that we could spend,
Knowing the things that we could do
If only she had gone before you.
